Preventive AIDS education for school going children
(Jul 2000 – June 2001)

With the perception of HIV/AIDS as a major threat to the survival of humanity, education today, more than at any time in the past is being called upon " to share the challenges and play the role of a catalytic agent in creating social conditions that can prevent the spread of HIV infection which leads to AIDS".
In the background of the above, this programme on "Preventive AIDS Education in Delhi based Government Schools", was

  Objectives
  • To delay the age of first sexual experience through making informed sexual choices.
  • To disseminate accurate and appropriate information on medical and psycho-social aspects of HIV/AIDS/STDs and the preventive method.
  • To provide information on anatomical, physiological and psycho-social aspects of sexual development and sexuality.
  • To address the gender issues and their link to reproductive and sexual health.
  • To promote 'Responsible Sexual Behaviour' among the adolescent youth.
  • To provide appropriate information to adolescent girls on specific female reproductive health issues.
  • To sensitize the teaching staff on HIV/AIDS/STDs, sexual health and sexuality.
  • To dispel the myths related to the male & female sexuality.

 RESULTS
Under this project 5000 Students of 10 Government Higher Secondary School were provided awareness on HIV/AIDS/STIs & sexual health issues, while 10-20 teachers and 10 peer educators from each school were trained in the skills of talking about HIV/AIDS. Over 1000 of these motivated children participated in the rally and mela organized on World AIDS Day in the year 2000 .
