India Population Programme (Male)
(Jan 2000 – Apr 2001 )

  • The programme was aimed at male participation in enhancing the reproductive health of women & effective population control.
  • Financial Support was provided by Municipal Corporation of Delhi under IPP VIII Project Govt. of India.
  CONCEPT
  • Using reproductive and child health approach to control population of a well defined lowly literate population

  TARGET POPULATION
  • 50,000 slum dwellers of Zakhira (West Delhi)

  OBJECTIVES
  • Improving all RCH indicators by spreading awareness on reproductive health.
  • To emphasize the responsibility of male in limiting the family size and family welfare and mother and child health
  • To create awareness about male reproductive health and prevention of STIs/RTIs
  • To create awareness about vasectomy particularly non scalpel - vasectomy
  • To eliminate gender bias and making males to share the responsibility in antenatal and post natal care.

  STRATEGIES
  • IEC through Person-to-person contact and group meetings in the community
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Forming Purush - mandals
  • Advocacy meetings with pradhans and other community leaders
  • Organising Street plays and film shows
  • Organising reproductive health cum immunization camps
  • Networking with Government run dispensaries and hospital for services.

 RESULTS ACHIEVED
  • Around 8000 men made aware on Reproductive and Child health issues
  • 82% of children received full immunisation
  • 90% of pregnant women registered for Ante Natal checkups
  • Couple protection rate went up by 26.62%
  • 13 men got vasectomy done in the year as compared to 1 vasectomy in the previous year
