India Population Programme (Female)

An Awareness & Skill Development Program for Young Women aimed at raising RCH indicators and population control.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi under IPP VIII Project, Govt. of India, provided financial support for this programme of one-year duration

  CONCEPT
  • Using reproductive and child health approach to control population of a well defined lowly literate population

  TARGET POPULATION
  • 10,000 People living in slums in and around Zakhira ( west Delhi)

  OBJECTIVES
  • Improving all RCH indicators by spreading awareness on reproductive health.
  • To motivate the eligible couples of the slum population to adopt small family norm.
  • To create awareness out mother and child health facilities available in the neighborhood Getting ANC and immunisation of pregnant women.
  • To help raise their socio economic status
  • To promote employment opportunities for girls and young mother in order to make them self reliant.
  • Getting pregnant women delivered in hospitals or atleast by trained Dais.
  • Getting all children immunised on WHO guidelines.

  STRATEGIES
  • IEC through Person-to-person contact and group meetings in the community
  • Individual and group counseling and Motivating people to adopt small family norms.
  • Forming mahila mandals, groups of adoloscent girls and mother-in-law groups
  • Improving literacy level of young women
  • Conducting workshops on reproductive and child health for young female volunteers to work as peer- educators
  • Empowering women through vocational training courses.
  • Getting all children immunised and all pregnant women checked by organising Reproductive health /Antenatal cum Immunization camps
  • Networking with Governement run dispensaries and hospital for services.

 RESULTS ACHIEVED
  • All the RCH indicators were raised by more than 20% at the end of this one year project .
  • 4800 women made aware on Reproductive and Child health
  • 82% of children received full immunisation
  • 100% of pregnant women registered for AN checkups
  • Couple protection rate went up by 31.11%
  • 105 women trained in the skill of cutting and tailoring
