It is a known fact that youth are highest at risk
of getting HIV infection due to their inquisitiveness
about sex and experimental nature added to the high
biological needs and needs to be targeted for any
HIV prevention programme
Youth belonging to the lower socio-economic background
is even more vulnerable due to:
1. Lack of sexual and reproductive health education
leading to learning through cheap pornographic literature
and experimentation.
2. Increasing globalisation resulting in exposure
to liberal culture which is alien to them and high
dose of sex and violence projected by the media through
TV, films and fashion propagating undesirable behaviour.
3. Prevalence of myths and misconceptions regarding
homosexuality masturbation etc in the community (parents/teachers
and peer group).
4. Low self esteem added to plenty of free time
available with no definite goals or proper direction.
DRISHTIKON is targeting this vulnerable group through
a focused programme ‘YUVA GHAR’
(A club for youth of Indira Colony and Golden Park,
two slums of west Delhi).
Approximately 1000 youth population between the
age 12 - 30 yrs is being provided facility of this
club’s various activities like Library, Gym,
Sports, Vocational training, Personality development
courses and career guidance. HIV /AIDS prevention
through BCC and training workshops and involving youth
to develop street plays on HIV/AIDS and other health
issues, is an integral part of the club’s programme
